Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is an important strategy for reducing stroke risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. This education provides a comprehensive overview of LAAO, including the relationship between atrial fibrillation and the left atrial appendage, patient selection and pre-procedure requirements, procedural considerations, post-procedure management, and long-term follow-up. The content is designed to support clinical practice and is aligned with the NCDR LAAO Registry and current standards of care.
The presentation establishes a consistent foundation of knowledge for nurses, technologists, and other team members involved in LAAO care. It supports staff readiness, interdisciplinary communication, complication recognition, patient education, and the delivery of safe, coordinated care throughout the LAAO patient pathway.
